The Captains’ Charities 2023 / 24

For this coming year, our Captains here at Ponteland have chosen three charities to support that they each have a personal connection with. These charities are the Alzheimer's Society, Parkinson's UK and FareShare North East. Peter Galbraith, Maggie Myers and Peter Denham are really excited for their year ahead, and look forward to the number of fund raising events that they are set to host for these wonderful charities.

Our Captain's have provided us a personal message for their choice of charity further down this page, and for more information on the their selected charities, you can visit their website by clicking on each individual image below.

Peter Galbraith (Club Captain) - Alzheimer's Society

The Alzheimer’s society is a fantastic charity who are more than worthy of our support. If you know someone who is affected by this terrible disease as im sure many of you have reading this, you will know that without the external support of others this is extremely challenging for any family to deal with.

The Alzheimer’s society are made up of staff who are dementia carers, trusted experts, campaigners, researchers, and clinicians. They are the UK’s largest collective force of people with unparalleled knowledge and have over 40 years of experience addressing the biggest challenges facing people living with dementia in modern times.

From the moment someone starts worrying about their symptoms, Alzheimer's Society can be there for them. This support means that people don't have to face this condition alone, and that together, we can build a better tomorrow for everyone affected. Your support also means that we can look to the future as well, investing in ground-breaking research to find better ways of treating and caring for people with dementia.

Maggie Myers (Lady Captain) - Parkinson's UK

This is my chosen charity for the year as Parkinson’s has touched my family as I am sure it has for many of you. When you live with a complex condition like Parkinson’s, you need access to high quality local health and care services that meet your needs.

This charity works to see rapid improvements to services and direct access to support, information and treatments that can help sufferers live better with Parkinson’s right now.
They work directly with the NHS to improve services to everyone in the UK. They campaign for and fund more specialist Parkinson nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals.

The charity supports a network of volunteer led groups offering peer support, trusted advice and information as well as activities for health and fitness and social connections.
Parkinson’s UK also funds pioneering research and so far in 2023 has invested £9.5 million in 3 groundbreaking clinical trials with the aim of fast tracking treatments to relieve symptoms right now and translate cutting edge research into practical ways to manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s.

I hope you will be able to help me raise funds for this charity over the coming year.

Peter Denham (Senior Captain) - FareShare North East

My chosen charity for my year as Seniors Captain will be FairShare North East, who I have been a volunteer driver for since December 2019. FareShare North East is the largest food redistribution charity in the North East. We take good-to-eat surplus food from the food industry and divert it to over 200 charities and community groups, reaching thousands of people each week. By making good use of a huge amount of food every year, we save it from being thrown away and help to combat climate emissions.
